Garrett Statement on Marriage Debate

December 9, 2009

As you know, these are trying times for our country and our state. Elected officials at all levels should be focused on reviving the economy and getting people back to work. Unfortunately, the focus these days in Trenton has been squarely on gay marriage.

My position on gay marriage has been clear from the beginning. I firmly believe that marriage is a sacred institution between one man and one woman. Any effort to fundamentally redefine marriage is not only contrary to public opinion, but also wrong.

What makes the effort to redefine marriage in New Jersey particularly ill-advised is the overtly political decision to do so during this lame duck session. Now is not the time for an outgoing legislature to rush through radical social policy. If our elected officials truly wish to represent the values and opinions of their constituents, they should put the issue directly to those who elected them.

Thankfully, the leadership shown by my friends Senator Gerry Cardinale and Assemblywoman Alison McHose is making a real difference in this debate. I hope that it will eventually lead to the people of New Jersey having a say on this issue. I also commend Governor-elect Chris Christie for being direct with voters and showing the courage to oppose this radical social policy.

The Democrats in Trenton have been in charge for nearly a decade. Now, as their power slips away, they are trying a few too many legislative last ditch efforts. Instead, we should allow the new governor and legislators to represent the will of the people who elected them.

I hope that you will call Governor Corzine at 609-292-6000 and tell him to respect the will of the people. You are the voters who elected a new government and your voice should be heard.
