Express Times Endorses Garrett
October 21, 2012
An excerpt from the Express Times endorsement...
Fiscal conservatism isn’t something U.S. Rep. Scott Garrett picked up on the way from his farm in Sussex County to Trenton, where he served several terms in the Assembly and state Senate. It was already deeply instilled in his make-up. Voters in northwest New Jersey sent the veteran Republican to Congress to keep hammering away at deficits, to accumulate power in his soft-spoken manner, and to promote his socially conservative agenda.
He’s now seeking his sixth term, and although the crescent-shaped Fifth District has changed somewhat through reapportionment — the greater Phillipsburg area is moving into the Seventh District, now represented by U.S. Rep. Leonard Lance — Garrett remains a good fit with a majority of voters, especially in Warren County. Should the Romney-Ryan team win the White House, Garrett could be in the running for the House Budget Committee chair, a lofty position to pursue his debt-fighting passions. The Express-Times editorial board endorses his re-election.
